Lakers' Howard cleared for 5 on 5 practice

Dwight Howard took another step forward in his return from back surgery, when he was cleared Tuesday for limited five-on-five scrimmages with the Los Angeles Lakers.
But Howard won't play in the Lakers' next preseason game, tonight against Portland in Ontario, Calif.
Before being cleared for five-on-five scrimmages, Howard had participated in every other aspect of the Lakers' practices during training camp except full-court contact.
The six-time All-Star center had surgery on his back last spring.
Howard hasn't projected a date for his debut with the Lakers but hopes that he can participate in a preseason game. After tonight's visit from the Trail Blazers, the Lakers will have six more exhibitions before their season opener Oct. 30 against Dallas.

The partnership was scheduled to be announced today in Beijing, where Li-Ning is headquartered and where the Heat are visiting for the NBA China Games tour.
Wade told The Associated Press that he expects the Li-Ning deal to continue through at least the remainder of his playing career. Wade wore Converse for his first six seasons, then Jordan Brand for the past three years.
"It was a great nine years, but for me, it was just time to move on," Wade told the AP. "I have certain goals that I want to reach, and I felt that I had to leave to reach those. So, I'm doing things a little differently. That's how I am, in a sense. I'm not necessarily a status-quo type guy."
Magic sign Johnson • The Orlando Magic signed free agent Chris Johnson, adding more depth to a preseason roster that is now at 20 players. The Magic picked up Johnson after he was released by the Los Angeles Clippers.
The 6-foot-6 forward appeared in 138 games in four seasons at the University of Dayton, where he averaged 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He and was a four-time Atlantic 10 Conference honoree and was named 2010 NIT Most Valuable Player.

Kirilenko returns to NBA • Timberwolves forward Andrei Kirilenko is back in the NBA after a season away and apparently feeling like he is back home, even though he spent his first decade in the league in Utah, not Minnesota.
"I really feel like I belong here," he said.
Kirilenko once felt like that with the Jazz, after he parlayed an All-Star Game appearance at age 23 into an $86 million contract that was supposed to make him the franchise's new face after John Stockton and Karl Malone retired.
But that was before Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams blossomed in the team's offense, before Kirilenko played out the final years of that six-year deal with a whopping salary but a diminished role.
Now, after a season playing back home in Russia, he says he knows just where he fits at age 31.
Former Piston dies • Donnie Butcher, who played five seasons in the NBA and later coached the Detroit Pistons, has died. Butcher, 76, averaged 6.1 points in 279 games with the Pistons and New York Knicks. He coached Detroit to the postseason in 1967-68, the team's only playoff appearance in a 10-season span.
